Achilles Tendinitis Treatment Kingswood

In our practice at Heel Pain Clinics of Adelaide, we frequently see Achilles Tendonitis, defined by inflammation or degeneration due to overuse and over-stretching of the Achilles tendon. Every day, we strive to provide care and support for a considerable number of patients in Kingswood suffering from Achilles Tendon Injuries.

What Are The Symptoms Of Achilles Tendinitis?

Patients who come to us with Achilles injuries often report a similar set of experiences:

  • A pronounced discomfort and rigidity in the affected area when they get up in the morning
  • Pain diminishes after walking about and heating (warm shower)
  • After several hours of activity, notably running, tennis, football, and dancing, the pain usually re-emerges

What Are The Causes Of Achilles Tendon Injuries?

The Achilles Tendon is usually subjected to three common injuries:

  1. Achilles Tendinitis (Achilles Tendon inflammation)
  2. Achilles Tendinosis/Tendonopathy (Achilles Tendon degeneration)
  3. Retrocalneal Bursitis

At Heel Pain Clinics of Adelaide, Achilles Tendinitis presents most commonly and is characterized by acute inflammation.

Over time, the tendon experiences thickening and swelling, culminating in a chronic condition that becomes more challenging to mitigate if left unchecked. Patients typically report stiffness in the heel or ankle area upon waking. In the case of Achilles tendinitis, the discomfort tends to subside with exercise, only to resurface and become painful later. Under microscopic examination, specific cells brought in by the body to control inflammation and aid tendon repair are evident in these inflammatory conditions. At this phase, the recovery time is relatively short. However, if the condition remains unaddressed for over six months, it may evolve into Achilles Tendinosis (see below), which could require a recovery period of 6-12 months.

At Heel Pain Clinics of Adelaide, we regularly come across cases where patients have been enduring an Achilles Tendon injury for an extended period exceeding six months. Such prolonged suffering often results in a complete change in the tendon’s structure, rendering it more difficult to address than Achilles Tendinitis.

Achilles Tendonopathy or Achilles Tendinosis is the progressed stage of chronic Achilles Tendinitis that is not characterized by inflammation. Rather, these patients have scarring thickening and/or microtear breakdown of the tendon. There is usually no redness or warmth of the surrounding tissue, although the area can be painful to touch.

We occasionally identify Retrocalcaneal Bursitis in patients at Heel Pain Clinics of Adelaide. The condition is characterized by inflammation within the sac, akin to a fluid cushion, nestled between the Achilles tendon and the heel bone. Often, a conspicuous bony bulge can be seen on the upper outer edge of the heel’s rear, a condition known as Haglund’s deformity.
