Achilles Tendonitis Treatment Bowden

Achilles Tendinitis Treatment Bowden

In our practice at Heel Pain Clinics of Adelaide, we frequently see Achilles Tendonitis, defined by inflammation or degeneration due to overuse and over-stretching of the Achilles tendon. Every day, we strive to provide care and support for a considerable number of patients in Bowden suffering from Achilles Tendon Injuries.

What Are The Symptoms Of Achilles Tendinitis?

We consistently hear from patients with Achilles injuries that they experience:

  • Feeling stiffness and pain in the affected region upon waking in the morning
  • The pain lessens after a bit of walking around and heat application, usually in the form of a warm shower
  • Reoccurs after several hours of activity especially running, tennis, football and dancing

What Are The Causes Of Achilles Tendon Injuries?

The Achilles Tendon is usually subjected to three common injuries:

  1. Achilles Tendinitis (Achilles Tendon inflammation)
  2. Achilles Tendinosis/Tendonopathy (Achilles Tendon degeneration)
  3. Retrocalneal Bursitis

At Heel Pain Clinics of Adelaide, Achilles Tendinitis presents most commonly and is characterized by acute inflammation.

Achilles Tendinitis Bowden
As the tendon swells and thickens over time, a chronic condition arises, which, if left unaddressed, becomes increasingly challenging to resolve. Early morning stiffness in the heel or ankle region is a usual symptom. With Achilles tendinitis, the initial discomfort often eases with physical activity, only to return and cause pain afterwards. Microscopic examination reveals specific cells within these inflammatory conditions, cells that the body mobilises to control inflammation and support tendon healing. At this stage, the recovery time is generally brief. However, if neglected for more than six months, it could escalate into Achilles Tendinosis (see below), with a recovery duration spanning 6-12 months.

At Heel Pain Clinics of Adelaide, we regularly come across cases where patients have been enduring an Achilles Tendon injury for an extended period exceeding six months. Such prolonged suffering often results in a complete change in the tendon’s structure, rendering it more difficult to address than Achilles Tendinitis.

Achilles Tendonopathy or Achilles Tendinosis is the progressed stage of chronic Achilles Tendinitis that is not characterized by inflammation. Rather, these patients have scarring thickening and/or microtear breakdown of the tendon. There is usually no redness or warmth of the surrounding tissue, although the area can be painful to touch.

Retrocalcaneal Bursitis is a condition we occasionally diagnose at Heel Pain Clinics of Adelaide. This refers to an inflammatory response in the fluid-filled sac located between the Achilles tendon and the heel bone. It’s common to observe a prominent bony bump on the top outer border of the heel’s back, recognized as a Haglund’s deformity.
