Factors Leading to Sever’s Disease in Children
Sever’s Disease is often triggered when the heel bone outpaces the growth of leg muscles, ligaments, and tendons during a child’s growth spurt. This imbalance makes the Achilles tendon tight, pulling on a delicate part of the heel called the growth plate. The growth plate is prone to inflammation due to the constant pulling. The separation of the growth plate from the heel occurs fibre by fibre because of various reasons:
- Growth of the child has made the bones longer than the muscles
- Excessive over-pronation (flat feet)
- Tight calves
- Poor/soft footwear
- Excessive sporting participation
