Tendons don’t need rest, why so?
-Resting tendons will reduce their load capacity which basically means the maximum
amount of force that can be safely applied to a tendon without causing any harm
So why do people get tendon pain such as the Achilles and Patella?
-This is primarily due to the fact that your load capacity sits at a certain level and that
capacity has been exceeded
-Doing nothing – most people that get injured will usually rest and not move at all.
This will actually reduce your load capacity and predisposes you to injury which
means that you may not be able to withstand the exercise you were previously doing
prior to injury
How do we exceed our load capacity?
-Frequency – Too much too soon – e.g. running 5km once per week then running 5km
3 times per week the following week thereafter
– Intensity – going too hard too soon – e.g. running 5km 3 times per week then
increasing that to a 12km run 3 times per week.
– Type of training – If you’re a runner used to running in straight linear lines then
transition into basketball which involves jumping, side movements and change in
direction. If you were to do so, transition into a new sport incrementally e.g. 1 hour for
the first week then 2 hours the following week before increasing days.
