What Are The Symptoms Of Achilles Tendinitis?

The tendon becomes swollen and thickened. It is a chronic problem which develops over a long period and can be very difficult to settle down the longer it is left unattended. Symptoms usually include stiffness behind the heel or ankle when rising in the morning. With Achilles tendinitis, it usually warms up with exercise only to become stiff and painful afterwards. When seen under the microscope, inflammatory conditions have specific cells that the body brings to that area of the body to help control the inflammation and heal the injured tendon. At this stage, recover time is short. If left for over six months, it may develop into Achilles Tendinosis (see below) which may take 6-12 to recover.
At Heel Pain Clinics of Adelaide, we see people presenting with an Achilles Tendon injury which has dogged them for over half a year. The make-up of the tendon has completely changed and this is harder to resolve than Achilles Tendinitis.

Achilles Tendonopathy or Achilles Tendinosis is essentially the advanced stage of chronic Achilles Tendinitis. It’s interesting to note that inflammation isn’t a characteristic of this condition. What these patients do experience is scarring, thickening, and/or microtear breakdown of the tendon. Despite the absence of redness or warmth in the surrounding tissue, the area can be sensitive and cause discomfort upon contact.

We occasionally identify Retrocalcaneal Bursitis in patients at Heel Pain Clinics of Adelaide. The condition is characterized by inflammation within the sac, akin to a fluid cushion, nestled between the Achilles tendon and the heel bone. Often, a conspicuous bony bulge can be seen on the upper outer edge of the heel’s rear, a condition known as Haglund’s deformity.
