Achilles Tendonitis Treatment St Georges

Achilles Tendinitis Treatment St Georges

At Heel Pain Clinics of Adelaide, we frequently treat a condition known as Achilles Tendonitis. This condition manifests as inflammation or deterioration due to an overextension and repeated strain on the Achilles tendon. We cater to the needs of numerous Achilles Tendon Injury patients in St Georges daily.

What Are The Symptoms Of Achilles Tendinitis?

In our interactions with patients suffering from Achilles injuries, we’ve noted the following common symptoms:

  • Feeling stiffness and pain in the affected region upon waking in the morning
  • A reduction in pain following a brief period of movement and warming up, often with the aid of a warm shower
  • The pain typically returns after prolonged activity, particularly when involved in running, tennis, football, or dancing

What Are The Causes Of Achilles Tendon Injuries?

The Achilles Tendon is usually subjected to three common injuries:

  1. Achilles Tendinitis (Achilles Tendon inflammation)
  2. Achilles Tendinosis/Tendonopathy (Achilles Tendon degeneration)
  3. Retrocalneal Bursitis

At Heel Pain Clinics of Adelaide, Achilles Tendinitis presents most commonly and is characterized by acute inflammation.

The tendon becomes swollen and thickened. It is a chronic problem which develops over a long period and can be very difficult to settle down the longer it is left unattended. Symptoms usually include stiffness behind the heel or ankle when rising in the morning. With Achilles tendinitis, it usually warms up with exercise only to become stiff and painful afterwards. When seen under the microscope, inflammatory conditions have specific cells that the body brings to that area of the body to help control the inflammation and heal the injured tendon. At this stage, recover time is short. If left for over six months, it may develop into Achilles Tendinosis (see below) which may take 6-12 to recover.
At Heel Pain Clinics of Adelaide, we see people presenting with an Achilles Tendon injury which has dogged them for over half a year. The make-up of the tendon has completely changed and this is harder to resolve than Achilles Tendinitis.

Achilles Tendonopathy or Achilles Tendinosis is essentially the advanced stage of chronic Achilles Tendinitis. It’s interesting to note that inflammation isn’t a characteristic of this condition. What these patients do experience is scarring, thickening, and/or microtear breakdown of the tendon. Despite the absence of redness or warmth in the surrounding tissue, the area can be sensitive and cause discomfort upon contact.

At Heel Pain Clinics of Adelaide we occasionally see Retrocalcaneal Bursitis. It refers to inflammation within the lubricating fluid like sac, which lies between the Achilles tendon and the heel bone. It is highly likely that there is the presence of a prominent bony bump on the outside-top border of the back of the heel. This is known as a Haglund’s deformity.
